How Economy Fares Can Ruin Your Trip

Almost every airline in the United States now offers the just-pay-for-a-seat flights. This is not really a bad thing if your only aim is to get from one point to another. However, if you think of how minimal the service offered is, you’ll realize how much economy fare is ruining your trip.

For example, economy fares sold by some airlines means zero access to overhead bins. There are other limits to that can make your trip as irritating as possible. As such, we have compiled a list of reasons to avoid economy fares.  Let’s jump right in:

Seat Assignments Are Limited or Based on a Fee

Based on the airline you’re flying; the seat assignment varies for economy fare passengers. Basically, you get what you’re given. While some airlines charge about $40 for seat assignment, others charge $10 for the same service.

No Group or Family Seats

If you get lucky to fly an airline that allows seat selection, guess what? Seating together is not always guaranteed. In fact, some airlines state that their basic economy fare means no group or family seating.

This may not be a problem if you’re traveling alone. However, it can be really frustrating when you’re traveling with your little ones.

You’ll Be the Last to Board

In almost all cases, you will always be the last to board. That means, even if you board an airline that allows you to use or pay for an overhead bin, there is no guarantee that you’ll find any remaining.

Restricted Baggage and Overhead Bins

The baggage policy for basic economy varies from one airline to another. Basic economy passengers on domestic flights can only pack a personal item that fits under the seat in front of him or her. No other type of baggage is allowed.

To use the overhead bin on some airlines, you’ll be required to pay a $25 fee. That means you’ll only be able to use the online check-in to check your bag in.

On the other hand, other airlines are less restrictive. They offer passengers flying on basic economy fares an opportunity to board with a personal item and a free carry-on. If the overhead bins are full, it will gate check your bag for free.

Don’t Expect Any Upgrade

It doesn’t matter if you are willing to drop the money necessary to upgrade from your basic economy fare, most airlines will not allow you.

For example, some airlines will allow you to purchase seat assignment within 48 hours of boarding, fare class change is not allowed. Basically, once you get into the basic economy, you’re stuck there.
